We create marbled patterns on fabric and paper by floating paints on a thickened water solution and then using various tools, such as rakes and paint brushes, to create different designs.
All of our paper and fabric is prepared beforehand with a mordant, called Alum, to ensure the paint sticks.
The thickened water solution is created by:
When the paints are dropped onto the water, they spread along the surface in pebble shapes. These paint pebbles can then be manipulated using different tools.
Once a design is complete on the water, a piece of fabric or sheet of paper can be carefully laid on the top and it will pick up the design as it is lifted off.

Marbling has a long history, dating back thousands of years. The oldest form of marbling is believed to be the Japanese suminagashi first practiced by Shinto priests in the 12th century.
The practice of marbling evolved and transformed over the subsequent centuries. It first arrived in Western Europe in the 1570s in Turkey, with the earliest English description of marbled paper appearing in 1615.
This shows the creation of a simple, pebble design.
